Prof. Dr. Martin Schmidl is an art scholar and artist who has served as Rector of the Kunsthochschule Kassel since 2021. He studied Fine Arts at the Städelschule Frankfurt and the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, as well as Communication Design in Munich. His research focuses on exhibition theory, as demonstrated by his doctoral thesis on the exhibition history of the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Postwar Exhibition Design. Displaying Dachau and his most recent publication Kritik der Ausstellung (Critique of the Exhibition). Schmidl has worked at numerous universities in Germany and abroad, founded artistic and academic initiatives, curated exhibitions for museums and institutions, and maintains an active artistic exhibition practice. He publishes regularly and is the author of the widely used handbook Zeichnen(Drawing), which has been published in multiple editions.
