The 13 universities and colleges were united on
initiative of the Hessian Ministry of Science and the Arts and the
universities connected therewith.
In October 2007 the State Minister at the time, Udo Corts, announced the founding of hessische Film- und Medienakademie.
has been active since August 2008. The hFMA office is situated at Offenbach Academy of Art and Design in Offenbach. Its Executive Director
is Anja Henningsmeyer.
The State of Hesse provided the initial
funding from its university innovation budget. This is augmented by
payments from the partaking institutions as well as third-party funds.

- 13 Members: 4 universities, 5 universities of applied sciences, 4 art colleges
- 67 Courses of studies and teaching areas
- 14.722 students in film and media
- 320 projects, many of them in cooperation with industry partners
