Abbas Kiarostami (1940–2016) is one of the defining figures of world cinema. From his early educational films in the 1970s through the landmark works of the 1980s and 1990s to his experimental projects in the twenty-first century, the Iranian director consistently sought to reinvent the cinematic medium.

Kiarostami's lyrical sensibility and the inquisitive gaze with which he explored the realities of post-revolutionary Iran fundamentally expanded cinema's capacity to reveal the poetic dimensions of the world around us. In the lecture and film series The Poetry of Reality: The Films of Abbas Kiarostami, leading scholars and experts on his work examine what Kiarostami's cinematic reflections on his time still have to say to us today.

Abbas Kiarostami's second feature film, the story of an unhappy marriage, offers a fascinating portrait of middle-class life in 1970s Tehran. Its influence on later Iranian filmmakers remains evident to this day, perhaps most notably in Asghar Farhadi's A Separation (Iran, 2011). Produced outside the Kanoon Institute, The Report was also the director's first film to feature professional actors, including Shohreh Aghdashloo, who emigrated first to England in 1979 before continuing her career in Hollywood. Nearly all prints and negatives of The Report were destroyed during the Iranian Revolution, leaving the film effectively inaccessible for decades. Only a few years ago was a heavily worn projection print digitally scanned, making the film available once again.

Organized by the Institute for Theatre, Film and Media Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt and DFF-Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum. Curated by Vinzenz Hediger and Daniel Fairfax.
