Since 2018, the Brussels Short Film Festival is an Oscar® Qualifying Film Festival. The winners of the Great Prize of the International and the National Competitions will be eligible for consideration in the Animated Short Film/ Live Action Short Film category of the Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with the Academy rules.

BSFF has 3 official sections - International (deadline 27.01.2019), National (deadline March 1st, 2019) and Student (deadline January 27th, 2019)- where short films compete for prizes with a total value of 45 000€. Every year about 330 short films from 80 different countries are programmed (in competitions & Off). Last January, the Brussels Short Film Festival has been recognised as an Oscar qualifying film festival by the Academy.

Last year, 5 German short films were finally selected in official competition (in international competition and next generation competition) over 4300 films submitted and only 130 selected! The hosts hope that this year again, they will have the chance to screen in their festival German short films of very high quality.
