Mit ihrem Titel würdigt die Reihe „Kracauer Lectures in Film and Media Theory“ den gebürtigen Frankfurter Philosophen, Soziologen, Schriftsteller und Film- und Medientheoretiker Siegfried Kracauer (1889-1966), einen der einflussreichsten Denker des 20. Jahrhunderts im Feld der Film- und Medientheorie. Zugleich verwies der Reihentitel auf die Rolle Frankfurts und seiner Universität als Gründungsorte der kritischen Reflexion des Films und der technischen Medien im 20. Jahrhundert.
Die Reihe setzt sich zum Ziel, avancierte aktuelle Positionen der Film- und Medientheorie und der Medienphilosophie sowie der Medienreflexion in der Kunst- und Kulturwissenschaft und der philosophischen Ästhetik zur Darstellung zu bringen und damit einen Beitrag zur Erweiterung und Entwicklung des Feldes der Film- und Medienwissenschaft zu leisten, der am schnellsten wachsenden geisteswissenschaftlichen Disziplin in Deutschland.

Screening Extractivism with a (More than) Human Face

Playfully referring to the program of radical reform of socialism in Czechoslovakia at the end of the 1960s (so-called “socialism with a human face”) and at the same time to the potential of environmentally conscious imagination in state socialism, this lecture aims to rethink industrial and agricultural film as a specific form of mediation of the human/nature/technology complex. It will primarily focus on films that have produced political rationality and aesthetics of energy and contributed to the neutralization (or questioning) of extractivism. Eastern European films celebrating coal miners, depicting the construction of large hydroelectric power plants and refineries, mapping the welding of transnational infrastructures such as oil and gas pipelines, explaining the construction of nuclear power plants, or revealing the possibilities of solar energy, as well as those communicating various energy crises, allow us to examine the connections between extractivism, energy, labour, and the environment differently than from the traditional perspective of the capitalocene, offering also a different map of geopolitical energy relations than between the West and the Global South.
This lecture will therefore offer a reframing of these concepts and dynamics through an Eastern perspective, while emphasizing the importance of studying the aesthetics of utility media as an essential complement to global material and intellectual histories and critical infrastructure studies. Drawing on a broad corpus of films spanning raw material sources and decades of the second half of the twentieth century, it will ask whether we can conceive industrial aesthetics beyond processuality, techno-optimism, and acceleration.
Lucie Česálková is a film historian and works as an Associate Professor at the Department of Film Studies, Charles University, and as an editor-in-chief of the academic journal Iluminace, published by the National Film Archive in Prague. In her research, she focuses on the history of nonfiction cinema, specifically its educational, promotional, or instructional variants, and on the history of noncommercial film exhibition and moviegoing. Recently, she co-edited the volume Non-Fiction Cinema in Postwar Europe. Visual Culture and the Reconstruction of Public Space (eds. Lucie Česálková, Johannes Preatorius-Rhein, Perrine Val, Paolo Villa, AUP 2024). Engaging the environmental and energy humanities perspective, her current project analyzes the ways nature was framed as a resource in Czech industrial and agricultural film and asks how a (post)socialist perspective can shift existing concepts of extractivism and the capitalocene.

This year’s theme, "Focusing on Diversity: Paths to a More Inclusive Film Culture", aims to explore the challenges and opportunities of diversity in film and media production, in film content, and in its presentation. Diversity encompasses various aspects such as ethnic background, gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, and cultural backgrounds. A diverse film industry and culture can help tell stories that better reflect the reality of our society. Promoting diversity leads to increased visibility and opportunities for underrepresented groups – both in front of and behind the camera. This often results in more innovative and authentic narratives that enrich audiences. Presenting such works to the public can help break down stereotypes, expand audiences, and create a more inclusive film experience. However, there are still many challenges to overcome to build a truly inclusive and diverse film culture, as individuals advocating for diversity frequently encounter numerous personal and structural obstacles.
Four short lectures by this year’s experts offer different perspectives on diversity in film production and culture. A moderated panel discussion contextualizes the topics presented and enables questions from the audience. In one-on-one consultations – held either on-site at Media Education Center North in the KulturBahnhof Kassel or online via Zoom – participants can receive personalized feedback and guidance on their own projects after registering in advance.
PPP’s program is primarily aimed at students from the network of the hFMA and participants of the 16th Hessian University Film Day, but is open to all interested parties.

Am Donnerstag, den 20. November 2025 findet der 16. Hessische Hochschulfilmtag (HHFT) im Rahmen des Kasseler DokFest statt.
Studierende der Hochschule Darmstadt, der Kunsthochschule Kassel, der Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach und der Hochschule RheinMain / Wiesbaden stellen dort ihre neuesten Filme einem ausgewählten Fachpublikum, sowie anderen Studierenden vor. Es gibt wieder Abschluss- und Semesterarbeiten sowie Debütfilme zu sehen.
Organisiert von Studierenden der Kunsthochschule Kassel mit Unterstützung der hFMA bietet der HHFT eine Plattform, um sich mit Filmemacher*innen anderer Hochschulen zu vernetzen, sich auszutauschen, Vertreter*innen der Film-, Fernseh- und Medienbranche zu treffen, neue Projekte zu pitchen und vor allem: um miteinander Filme zu sehen und zu zeigen.

PROFIS PLAUDERN PRAXIS XVII - 21. November 2025 - 11 Uhr
Im Rahmen des 42. Kasseler Dokfest findet am Freitag, den 21.11.2025, von 11 bis 17 Uhr, die DokfestEducation-Veranstaltung Profis Plaudern Praxis XVII im Medienprojektzentrum Offener Kanal im KulturBahnhof Kassel statt.
Mit dem diesjährigen Thema DIVERSITÄT IM FOKUS: WEGE ZU EINER VIELFÄLTIGEN FILMKULTUR möchte PROFIS PLAUDERN PRAXIS die Frage nach Herausforderungen und Möglichkeiten von Vielfältigkeit in der Film- und Medienproduktion, filmischen Inhalten und ihrer Aufführung beleuchten und lädt herzlich zu vier Vorträgen, einer Paneldiskussion und anschließenden Einzelgesprächen mit Expert*innen aus der Film- und Festivalbranche ein.
Dieses Jahr übernehmen die hessische Film- und Medienakademie und das Kasseler Dokfest zudem jeweils eine Übernachtung und Festivalakkreditierung für Studierende von hessischen Hochschulen, die an PPP teilnehmen möchten. Das Kontingent ist begrenzt.

Tauche ein in eine außergewöhnliche Ausstellung, die bewegt und zum Nachdenken anregt!
Vom 18. bis 28. November verwandelt sich das Rathausfoyer Wiesbaden in einen Raum voller eindrucksvoller Kunstwerke von Studierenden des Studiengangs Kommunikationsdesign der Hochschule RheinMain.
Mit Installationen, Plakaten, Skulpturen, Konzepten und performativen Erlebnisräumen machen die jungen Künstler*innen sichtbar, was im Verborgenen bleibt – geschlechtsspezifische Gewalt gegen Frauen im Kontext von Pornographie und Prostitution.
Die Ausstellung ist das Ergebnis eines viersemestrigen Forschungsprojekts zur Istanbul-Konvention, einem zentralen Menschenrechtsabkommen gegen Gewalt an Frauen, das in Wiesbaden durch das Kommunale Frauenreferat umgesetzt wird.

Eröffnung durch Oberbürgermeister Gert-Uwe Mende, Grußworte von Bürgermeisterin Christiane Hinninger und Professorin Dr. Eva Waller, Präsidentin der Hochschule RheinMain. Die Studierenden führen anschließend persönlich durch ihre Werke – ein intensives Erlebnis, das berührt und inspiriert.

The Diskurs Festival, taking place from 6 to 9 November 2025, is an international theater and performance festival that has been organized by students of Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen for over 40 years. Its special feature lies in the combination of theory and practice and is reflected in an interdisciplinary, diverse program.
This year's edition is entitled “Foreshocks” and is dedicated to current social and political upheavals - and their impact on art and culture. The festival will take place in Giessen from November 6 to 9, 2025. We invite artists, collectives, theorists, and activists to join us in exploring how art can emerge and survive in precarious and authoritarian contexts in order to test resistant strategies together.
The festival team is affected by the current budget cuts and is currently still trying to secure funding. Unfortunately, they are therefore unable to provide any binding information on fees. However, it is very important to them to pay for your work fairly and they hope to be able to give you more detailed information on this soon.
The festival thrives on the Institute's strong community (bed exchange, Helping Hands, Küfa) and its DIY charm. As far as possible, they would like to organize the festival as accessible as possible. If you have any questions about this in advance, please contact them!
