APPLICATION & CONTACT

Body is Voice is about discovering ways to bring movement, breath andvoice together. The body as our instrument has a huge moving and sounding potential which keeps on unraveling throughout our lifetime. This work offers tools and pathways to tap into our resources and to explore the variety of sounds, movement and stillness as we travel through the different spaces inside the body. The idea is to develop ourselves towards a creative state where the movement and voice are equally present ways of expression.

Body is Voice work consists of breathing, moving and vocal exercises which are inspired by Roy Hart Voice work, Release Technique, Body-Mind Centering (BMC), Contact Improvisation and Authentic Movement among others. We explore musicality, rhythm and texture of voice through different structural spaces of the body. What is the quality of our voice when initiated from the pelvis? Or from the soles of our feet? And how does the voice affect the movement, and vice versa? Solo, partner and group exercises and improvisations enhance the ability to listen, generate unique movement and vocal material and stay in tune with the present moment. They offer a frame from where we can reach out towards creative wilderness and unknown areas of expression. It is the ability to surrender ourselves to the body’s inherent intelligence which is the seed of this work. As we dive deeper into our resonating body, we can encounter unexpected, funny, emotional, dynamic, raw and beautiful sounding and moving body landscapes.

Heini Nukari (1972) is a Finnish dance-voice artist, performer and body-oriented voice teacher. She has a long experience as a performer and explorer of movement and voice improvisation. Since three years she is studying acupuncture. The holistic perspective on body, mind and nature is essential to her teaching and performing.

„I’m a dance-voice artist, performer and body-oriented voice teacher. I have always loved singing, playing piano, moving and making theatre. Already early on it was clear that I want to work in a creative field and share movement and voice with other people.

I studied new dance in Amsterdam at the School for New Dance Development from where I graduated in 1997. SNDO was at least back then an unique place to study with classes a.o. in Contact Improvisation, Release technique, Body Mind Centering, experiential anatomy, composition and improvisation. The school gave us the chance to explore movement from within and respecting our own body. The studies gave me a good self-confidence to create my own things and stand behind my choices. After Amsterdam, I moved to Berlin which was for a long time my base for working internationally as a freelancer. I was inspired by different cultures, life situations and people and let that influence my physical and vocal expression. During the years I have created many performances which combine movement, sound and voice in a comprehensive way. In 2013 I moved back to Helsinki where I originally come from. Finland feels like the right place to be and share movement and voice at the moment.

I have been teaching body-oriented voice work in many countries since 2006.My teaching is based on my experiences as performer and explorer of the body and is influenced by the Roy Hart Theatre work, contemporary dance, Contact Improvisation, Butoh dance, yoga, Body Mind Centering and Authentic Movement practice. I call my work Body is Voice.

Related and connected to the dance and voice work, I practise and teach Meridian Stretching and yoga. Since 2014 I’m also studying acupuncture and oriental medicine.“
